This story has been updated from its original version.

The man who shot and killed himself Friday morning, May 16, after exchanging fire with police in Oregon City was a former police sergeant who surrendered his certification in 2022.

A law enforcement official shared that the man was Scott Farmer, who worked with the Canby Police Department until 2022, as first reported by the Oregonian/OregonLive.

Farmer, whose career in law enforcement dated back to 1996, also served stints with the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, North Bend Police Department and Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.

According to records from the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training, which oversees police certification, Farmer agreed to give up his certifications in October 2022 after he was convicted of unlawful transfer of a firearm. Clackamas County Circuit Court made him pay $760 for the misdemeanor crime.

According to OCPD, officers responded along with the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office to a reported disturbance in the 13300 block of Clairmont Way Friday morning.

“Once on scene, officers encountered an adult male subject involved with the disturbance in the street,” OCPD wrote in a statement shared via social media. “The man was armed with a gun and shot at an officer. The officer returned fire, and the man subsequently shot himself.”

Police said the man was declared dead at the scene and no police officers were injured in the incident.

The officer who fired at the man was placed on critical incident leave, which is standard protocol following an incident like this, OCPD said.

The Clackamas County Major Crimes Team and the Clackamas County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the event, with the DA’s office expected to release more information in the coming days.
